Volunteers Program Outline

Volunteering is a great way for you to be involved in the 26th Congress and General Assembly of the International Union of Crystallography!

 

Up to one hundred volunteer positions will be available to support and attend the 26th Congress and General Assembly of the International Union of Crystallography at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from 21 - 29 August 2023.

As a volunteer, you will play a vital role in creating a positive and welcoming atmosphere for delegates while assisting the hosts to deliver a professionally run Congress.

When you volunteer for 20 hours across four or five days, you will receive a full Congress registration including a ticket to the Congress Gala Dinner.

When you volunteer for four hours on one day you will receive a day registration for that day.

We are looking for volunteers who have the time, dedication and enthusiasm to help us deliver this major international event.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking volunteers to assist staff and support Congress delegates by:

  • Staffing information desks and handling attendee registrations,
  • Providing site directions,
  • Acting as room runners and providing microphone support for Q&A sessions,
  • Organising conference material,
  • Supporting sessions to ensure they run smoothly,
  • Providing support in session rooms,
  • Meeting with people who require assistance in another language,
  • Helping people get where they need to be,
  • Running errands related to conference activities,
  • Assisting interactive exhibits at our Crystal-A-Con educational experience (need for Working with Children’s check – which are free for volunteer activities) and
  • Presenting at our ‘Meet the crystallographer’ exhibit at the Crystal-A-Con experience (need for Working with Children’s check – free for volunteer activities).
  • These tasks will typically require multiple four to five hour periods. This will allow volunteers to spend half a day on congress activities and half a day at leisure attending congress sessions.

Who can apply?

To apply you will need to be:

  • At least 18 years of age,
  • Studying or researching crystallography, science, engineering, environmental science, health, medicine/biomedicine or science communication (or another relevant course/field),
  • Fluent in English (proficiency in a second language would be an advantage),
  • Available to attend at least one training/orientation session prior to the Congress,
  • Be available to work a total of 20 hours between 21 – 29 August 2203,
  • Able to fund and take care of your own travel arrangements (this includes visa, flights and accommodation).

Note: We welcome applications from people at any career stage. Preference will be given however to students/early career researchers who are enrolled/working at institutions in Australia and New Zealand and those who are members of the Society of Crystallographers in Australia and New Zealand (SCANZ).
